Three Truths of Psychic Gifts

“Everyone is psychic”. We’ve all heard it before, and many people understandably think it’s a scam. The problem with this statement is that, yes, while everyone does have the capacity for psychic ability, the typical understanding of what psychic ability is, simultaneously watered down and dramatized by Hollywood and warped by reality TV personalities, has left the majority of people incredibly confused. The truth is, we ARE all psychic to some degree, we just have varying gifts that are hidden behind energetic blockages. These blockages were created to protect us while mulling about in society until the timing is right to remove them. If you’re reading this, I hope that means it’s time for you to remove yours and step into the wonderous world of your hidden power and spiritual gifts.

While I do want to write a post dedicated to instructing the reader on how to remove their own energetic blockages, I first need to write this post to explain a few things and offer some practice with trusting yourself. In my journey to removing my own blockages as well as speaking with other people who struggled with the same things I have; I learned that understanding what to expect from real psychic communication with the spiritual world is imperative because there needs to be complete trust in what you experience and no doubt over your own sanity.

First, let’s examine sane vs insane. One thing I was taught while getting my degree, and something that I’m sure a lot of us have heard throughout our lives, is that if you’re suspicious of your own sanity, then you’re probably sane. People who have true delusions or hallucinations genuinely believe that what they’re experiencing is real and never question their sanity. I prefer to step away from this rule of thought because it’s a paradox and I don’t like talking myself around in circles. You may question it initially, but then if you accept the paradox, then you start to believe yourself. But once you believe in yourself, you start to question your sanity again because you believe you are sane. Now we’re back to square-one. See what I mean?

Aside from that, one of my specialties while working in mental health services was working with patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders and schizophrenia. While there were many patients who did not accept their disorders and believed that they were sane, there were plenty others who recognized that they had a problem and actively pursued help. Just because they accepted that their experiences came from delusion does not mean that they didn’t have a disorder—that level of thinking is extremely dangerous to the person experiencing the hallucinations. That is why I’m going to pause for a moment here and recommend that if you have been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder or a variation of schizophrenia, please listen to your doctors and take your medication. It is not necessary to pursue psychic gifts, and it is much more important for you to focus on self-care, self-acceptance, and self-love, instead.

For the rest of us, before we get into step-by-step instruction on how to “open your third-eye”, you should know that the majority of what you have heard about this process is garbage. I remember flipping through the spiritual community on TikTok back in 2021 where the biggest trend was convincing people that “only special people could open their third-eye” and “once it’s open, it never closes and you just see dead people all the time” and “life is TERRIFYING after opening your third-eye so if you can’t handle it, don’t do it”. All of which rivals as some of the most obnoxious content I have ever had the displeasure of watching. Instead of working at this in “rules” or “steps”, we’re going to start by sharing “truths”.

TRUTH #1: You don’t need to “open” your third-eye. It is not stuck that way. You’re not going to be tormented by visions. Working with the third-eye is as natural as it gets. And you probably already do it a lot without realizing it.

First, you should know that the term “third-eye” is derived from Hindi philosophy, along with all the other chakras. But it is not as mystical as it sounds, as science tells us that the “third-eye” is a biological part of the brain called the pineal gland. The pineal gland controls our ability to interact with spiritual consciousness and is a natural part of every human being. Sometimes it may just “happen” but mostly, it works like another muscle in the body—if you want to develop it, you have to work with it, train it, practice with it, and build skill. The more time and energy you put into it, the more advanced your abilities are. Very simple. And definitely nothing to be scared of.

I said above “you probably already do it a lot without realizing it”. What I mean by this is that communication with spiritual consciousness doesn’t mean you physically see an entity in front of you or hear an actual voice speaking in your ear. If you do, that may be a sign of mental illness and I recommend speaking with a professional before continuing.

For the sake of making this easier to describe, let’s say there’s a spirit in the room you want to communicate with. Depending on what your gift is, you could either “see” them, “hear” them, or “feel” them (“taste” and “smell” also come into play, here, but those are more rare abilities so I might go into that in a later post in more detail—but you’re not going around sniffing and licking ghosts, it’s just a sense that comes to you). I use quotations because you aren’t using your physical-five senses to do this. If you “see” something, it’s more like thinking back on a memory, or having a vivid daydream. You recognize it’s not happening in front of you physically, but to a certain point, it feels as though you are experiencing it. If you “hear” something, it’s more like what you hear when you have a song stuck in your head. You recognize the sound isn’t coming from your ears, you know you’re not physically hearing it, but you still “hear” it in your mind. “Feeling” something, is what it means to have a “gut-feeling”. You couldn’t reach out and touch it, but the air seems denser, you have a sense of being watched, maybe the hairs on your arms stand up on end because you can feel an energetic charge in the room.

In this way, we all use our psychic gifts all the time without really noticing, because it’s just a part of who we are. It’s not fantastical or exciting, it’s just life.

TRUTH #2: One of the most basic forms of psychic ability that everyone has, no matter what specific giftset they use, is telepathy.

This truth sounds a little farfetched, but once you understand how commonplace utilization of the pineal gland is day-to-day, you realize just how commonplace telepathy is, too. Again, Hollywood dramatizes this gift and makes it sound way more exciting than it actually is. Telepathy is how we communicate on the spiritual plane. All spiritual consciousness is connected to each other, like the roots of a tree coming together to make up the whole. We are connected to each other, nature spirits, more advanced spiritual energies like the gods, anything that exists that has spiritual consciousness. And therefore, you can communicate through those connections. When you think of someone, and then suddenly, they reach out to you, that’s telepathy. When you SWEAR you hear your phone buzz, but the text doesn’t come in until you pick up your phone to read it, that’s telepathy. When you set an intention to leave an offering for a spirit and you get an “idea” of what to leave them, that’s telepathy. It’s our consciousness sensing the energetic waves that pass between all of our connections with each other and signal to us that someone is reaching out. With practice, we get better at reading those signals and interpreting them, which allows us to be more precise with our communication. And of course, some people are more closely connected than others or their abilities are more defined, and this comes easier to them, but in all, we are all capable of telepathy in its most basic form.

These two truths are required to understand and trust before removing your energetic blockages. Without that trust, you may be able to remove the blockage initially, but it will reseal immediately with your doubt as messages come through. You will still receive messages, but you won’t be able to recognize or interpret them.

But how can we tell the difference between what is a psychic message and what is our imagination? Confirmation.

TRUTH #3: You need both the spiritual and the physical to get to the WHOLE TRUTH.

I’m a strong proponent of allowing the spiritual and the physical to work together. You cannot have one without the other and combining the two is the only way to the “whole truth”. Eihwaz teaches us this, by reminding us that while it is important to re-energize and maintain our spiritual bodies, it is just as important to care for our physical bodies. Like a tree uses it’s leaves to gather nutrients from the sunlight, so does its roots refresh itself from the ground. We need both to survive, and staying grounded in physical reality keeps us from flying too close to the sun. They are the two sides to every story, two sides of the same coin, whatever metaphor works better for you.

Which means, just because you receive a message doesn’t mean you need to take it as absolute truth. Use discernment, stay healthily skeptical, and try to figure out where the message is coming from. If you are unpracticed, all messages may feel the same and you may not be able to tell if it’s coming from your intuition (your higher self), an advanced spiritual entity, a negative energetic entity, another person, or simply your physical mind. Learning to tell the difference comes with experience. Experimentation. Practice.

So, here’s where my little exercise for you comes into play. Make sure you take your time with this and use it as often as possible. Developing your gifts and removing blockages takes time—once I learned this process, it took me several months to remove the blocks, but even longer to completely let go of the doubt. Be patient with yourself, this is not a race or a competition, and every path looks different.

If you recognize that you have received a message—this could be as simple as having a feeling that someone else was in the room outside of physical perception, getting a song stuck in your head and then immediately hearing it on the radio, seeing some sort of pattern or symbol that means something to you but not sure whether its just coincidence, literally anything you could have a question about. Focus on your heart and your mind, imagine yourself reaching out into the cosmos, and ask for a confirmation one way or the other. Be specific and pick something that is relatively uncommon to see in your area.

For example, if it’s the middle of summer, I’ll usually choose something along the lines of “a snowflake for yes, and a Christmas sweater for no”. Set the intention for the confirmation, and then let it go. Try not to think about it and just go about your day. Don’t go looking for it, just give it the space to come to you. Sometimes the answer is immediate but most times, give it up to 24 hours to come along. I have done this countless times, and I have never had a question go unanswered. Even the most obscure symbols can find a way, somehow.

Use this exercise to learn the difference between what is a message and what is just your thoughts. Use it to learn where those messages are coming from, how different they feel depending on the source. And don’t take it too seriously, let yourself have fun with the process of learning something new about yourself and the world around you. Some of what you find may surprise you, and that’s the best part.

If you have someone you can practice with, I have two additional recommendations:

  1. Get out a deck of regular playing cards. Have another person draw a card from the deck and look at it, but don’t let them show you. Tell them to imagine the card in their mind, just thinking about the suit/number, and make sure they stay focused on it. Tell them to imagine “sending” the card to your mind. Go ahead and just say the first thing that comes up for you. You’re not going to get it right every time but it at least helps “flex the muscle” and you learn a lot about discerning between actual messages and your own expectations/thoughts. I had a lot of fun with this one while practicing with other students while getting certified, just try not to take it too seriously.

  2. This was a game I used to play with my husband, and we had a lot of fun with it: each person takes turns picking a random item/color/number and hold it in your mind. Then let the other person try to read it from you. Same as the exercise above—just focus on having fun with it and don’t take it too seriously. Everything you do is helping you learn, you don’t have to be right every single time (but it is pretty entertaining when you are).

Good luck with your endeavors—and stay tuned for when I eventually get around to writing out a detailed explanation of how to dive into your spiritual energy and heal blockages. (Though you’ll find through this process, the work will already be halfway done.)
